Larchwood Lodge 305 sq.m (3,400 sq.feet) Eco House

Welcome to Larchwood Lodge

Larchwood Lodge is a stunning 305 sq.m (3,400 sq.feet) eco house set on 4.2 acres in the beautiful Sunny South East close to some of the country's best beaches and all the lovely region has to offer. The house was described by Construct Ireland Magazine as ‘an eco-statement par excellence’. This should come as no major surprise having been built by Riko House, the same eco house manufacturer that won ‘Best Off-Site’ timber building in London in the 2007 Wood Awards as well as being a finalist in the 2007 ‘Grand Designs’ awards.

The House

Riko House are a manufacturer of architect designed eco-houses and specialize in the production of ‘solid wood’ houses. These houses differ from conventional and timberframe houses by their patented laminated solid wood wall systems that utilise massive glu-laminated solid walls in place of concrete blocks or lighter timberframe panels.

Construct Ireland ArticleThese solid wood walls are then insulated on the outside with a natural high density wood fiber insulation and clad in a variety of finishing materials such as silikat render or Siberian Larch. The elements of the house are comprised of almost 100 percent timber products. Everything from the massive laminated beams, joists and trusses to the Siberian larch windows and doors are infused with the beauty of wood. Coupled with a high level of insulation, a highly efficient heat pump system and underfloor heating throughout the house, provides a level of living comfort and ambience that has to be experienced to be believed. A 3,400 square foot house that provides all heating, washing, cooking, in fact all energy required annually for only 6 euro per day! The heating system in this house is not used between late April and mid October annually. For more in-depth information of the technical specification of the house structure please see the tech spec page.

The following information provides an overview of the living space in the house:

Central European StyleThe house is built in a Central European style which provides it with a very unique external facade and a visually appealing exterior. The interior of the house takes advantage of its building system in that it provides an airy, spacious and light filled interior with high beamed ceilings on the ground floor and all vaulted ceilings on the first floor. The house is orientated south west and the design of the main living areas were given priority to take advantage of this solar gain by designing the living space into an open plan area encompassing the kitchen, living room and the stunning 20 foot vaulted sunroom. An almost 180 degree view of the private landscaped gardens can be seen from this area. Access to the large communal deck that surrounds this part of the house is via french doors from each of these rooms.

The main hall is a light filled arena with and open landing and views to the vaulted ceiling above. The first floor is via an oak, metal and glass custom made stairs.

The ground floor is comprised of large entrance/hallway, two bedrooms, toilet, office/bedroom, kitchen, sunroom, sitting room and utility room.

The first floor is comprised of large gallery, toilet, storage press and three bedrooms. The master bedroom has a walk in wardrobe and separate ensuite. There is also a large balcony off this bedroom accessed by two French doors.

Larchwood Lodge GalleryThe internal finishes, in keeping with all other elements of the house, are the highest spec available. To mention a few; engineered oak and walnut flooring throughout, solid oak skirting, architrave, door frames and doors, chrome lights and fittings, walnut kitchen with built in units and American fridge. The sanitary units are all by Geberit and all dual flush wall mounted units. The sitting room has a stone clad Anki prefabricated insulated chimney connected to a glass-fronted solid fuel fire.

The timber cladding used on the main house, garage and studio is Siberian Larch. The beautiful, sustainable and durable wood is the choice of discerning architects.
